 This is a truly Russian national art craft.
The Rostov jewellers have mastered the
artistic enamel art since the 12th century.
Russian word "finift" originates from Greek
"fingitis", that means "light bright stone ".
Finift is the special kind of applied art,
in which the basic material is glass mass
coloured with metal oxides. Thus gold mixed
with glass gives it a ruby colour, cobalt colours
glass in blue, copper - in green.
For the specific colouring effects the enamel,
contrary to the glass, is toned down. Icons,
crosses, portraits, ornaments painted on the finift,
are characterized by an exceptional durability,
brightness and purity of colours.
